Bio

Julie Bernstein Engelmann earned her degrees on both coasts: her M.F.A. from UCLA and her B.A. from Barnard College in New York City, where she was fortunate to study with first-generation abstract expressionist Milton Resnick. Julie's paintings have won many First Place and Best of Show awards in western Pennsylvania. She is represented by La Fond Galleries in Pittsburgh, and is a member of the Associated Artists of Pittsburgh and the Pittsburgh Society of Artists. Julie is an ArtsPath rostered artist in the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts Directory of Artists-In-Education.

Julie lives in Indiana, Pennsylvania, where she serves as co-president of the Indiana Art Association (two terms) and as Vice President of the Indiana Arts Council. She teaches art through the School of Continuing Education at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Julie's artwork has been purchased by corporate, private and public collections. Her painting, "Restart," was purchased by the Greater Latrobe School District Special Collection in 2006, and is included in A Unique Vision of Art, a book of the collection published by the GLSD Art Conservation Trust in 2008.

Julie's artwork can be viewed at www.julieengelmann.com.

Artist Statement

As a colorist coming from an abstract background, I honor the lush beauty and tactility of paint, its marks and surprises. I look for stirring passages where rich, naturalistic colors and textures weave in luscious combinations and mystifying surprises. When images appear, they add scale and depth, and bring with them a personal, dreamy dimension.

Most importantly, I watch for the resonating spiritual space of the painting to come into focus and open up like a hologram. A painting isn't finished until the space holds together and I've seen something thrilling that I've never seen before.

As my work progresses, I hope it will add a feminine page to the book of abstract expressionism. Historically speaking, I believe the dialog of abstraction has barely begun.
