At the end of January, I had the uplifting honor of giving about 140 third graders the experience of learning about abstract painting and making their own “paint butterflies.”
Each year, the Greater Latrobe School District organizes a Third Grade Art Symposium, where every third grader is brought in for four mini-classes with four different artists in one afternoon. Besides my abstract workshop, they worked with a sculptor, a printmaker, and a dancer.
Third grade seems to be the magic age when kids are old enough to care about the ownership of their creations, but young enough not to conform or judge themselves. A true delight!
